Description Daniel Dalton 2008-05-05 09:24:34 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Hi,

When I type up a document in openoffice writer and run a word count (first selecting the whole document) I click on word count from the tools menu and flat review says nothing except something like current selection and the ok button.
So I can't tell how many words are in the document. Instead I must use a command line tool called 'wc' to check my word doc.

Another example is the exit with out saving changes: orca says the buttons, eg. cancel or save, but you can't read the question, so you need to do a bit of guessing... From memory this worked on my ubuntu laptop, but haven't checked recently.
I'm running the latest openoffice in debian lenny unstable: aptitude says its 2.4.0-5.

Anyone else seeing this problem?
If you want any more info please let me know... Also the spell checker doesn't work, but it just says ok when there are errors in the document, I'll check that this isn't an OO bug before reporting though.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Steps to reproduce:
Run word count in openoffice.org writer from tools then word count and try reading the screen with orca.
2.
3.

Actual results:
Orca just says current selection and OK, not much useful info. So you don't hear the number of words.

Expected results:
To hear the number of words?

Does this happen every time?
Of course!

Yes, you are correct. These two dialogs (and many many more) are
unfortunately broken in OOo 2.4.

In another bug, I've been working with the OOo accessibility engineers
to try to fix a similar bug for the spell check dialog.

They provided a build of OOo 3.0 (beta) where this fix has been made.
I just tried your two problems on it, and they too are also fixed.

This fix hasn't been incorporated into a publically available OOo 3.0
(beta) yet, but hopefully it shouldn't be too much longer.

For now, I'm blocking this bug against that OOo issue:

Comment 2 Rich Burridge 2008-05-28 18:24:43 UTC
Unblocked a little while ago because the OOo developers pointed me
at a private version of OOo 3.0 (beta) where this problem has been fixed.

When that same fix shows up in a publically available OO0 3.0 (beta)
release, then I'll close this bug.

Just waiting on a public version of OOo 3.X to be made available
with this fix in. To get this out of my face when looking for
bugs to still work on, I'm adding a new "[to confirm]" preface
to the summary line for now.

I have just confirmed that the two problems reported are fixed in the publicly-available OOo 3.0 dev m24(build:9329). Closing this bug out as NOTGNOME.
