Description david gowers 2008-05-04 02:54:47 UTC
ABR brushes do not work with 'Open as Image'. However, drag and dropping a brush into the image works. This is a bit confusing.

Expected behaviour:
Either 'open as image' is disabled for ABR brushes, or, preferably, Open as Image opens the ABR that provided the brush.

We would have to add a plug-in then that opens ABR brushes. Or better yet, add that feature to the existing brush loader plug-in. Perhaps even combine the gbr and gih plug-ins into one and add the capability to open ABR brushes.

Creating a combined brush-load plug-in that is able to load all the brush formats that the core can load seems like a nice task for someone who wants to get his/her hands dirty with GIMP programming. It involves doing some refactoring and cleanup in existing plug-in code and incorporating some code from the core brush-loader. This is not trivial, but also not too ambitious. Setting the gnome-love keyword.

The plugin to load the abr brush is at http://registry.gimp.org/node/126 . It's the reference source that helps to included Photoshop brush as Gimp brush.

I recently discover that Gimp data are loaded through factories. But one cannot add a new loader to these factories : no PDB entries, nor access to core Gimp objects from modules.

I also look at how Gimp modules works. That is also possible, but module creation is not supported by gimptool : thus end users may be limited to build it by themselves.
