GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 528634
Bookmarks Menu Restructure
Last modified: 2016-09-28 16:40:41 UTC
Currently, attaching a topic to a bookmark relegates that bookmark to a submenu in the Bookmarks menu, which I think is unfair as it makes it harder to get to than those which are currently uncategorized. I think the bookmarks menu should be restructured such that there is a new "Favourites" topic which will always show in the top-level menu, above the regular category submenus. Additionally, the uncategorised bookmarks which currently show in the top-level menu should be placed into the same "Not Categorised" pseudo-topic that the Bookmarks Browser uses. This could go at the very bottom of the list. In summary: ==== Add Bookmark... Bookmarks Browser ---- Favourite 1 Favourite 2 Favourite 3 ---- Topic 1 >> Topic 2 >> Topic 3 >> Topic 4 >> ---- Not Categorised >> ==== If I can get the go-ahead for this, I can work on it. Cheers!
We actually already have a Most Visited topic, it's just not shown in the Bookmarks menu. This is bug 148315. I'm not opposed to a 'Not categorized' submenu, but it should only be activated above a certain number of bookmarks menu items, much like the gtk bookmarks in the Locations menu.
Most Visited isn't what I'm after. I want a few, hand-selected bookmarks to be top-level bookmarks. Perhaps mixing the terms "Favourites" with "Most Visited" would be confusing, I don't know. Also, the "Not Categorized" submenu should always be active IMO, to make sure there is a distinction between those which are in the top-level menu because they are explicitly chosen (tagged with "Favourite").
Have you considered drag-dropping your "Favourites" topic to the toolbar? That might be even faster than the bookmarks menu. I know that I have three topics on my toolbar (News, Coding, and Humour) as those are my most frequently accessed topics. Of course, this assumes that you're comfortable using the mouse for accessing your favourites rather than the keyboard.
I don't want to waste toolbar space, really. I appreciate the thought, but this wasn't a support request. :)

New popover doesn't have this problem
