GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 526798
Accessing the Impress Presentation Wizard with Orca hangs Impress
Last modified: 2008-05-30 19:46:10 UTC
Steps to reproduce. 0. Launch Orca. 1. Launch Impress (wizard appears). 2. Space on Next button. 3. Tab 3 times to list of slide designs. 4. Down Arrow once to select <original> 5. Alt N for Next button 6. Alt B for Back button 7. Alt N for Next button Expected results: Impress would not hang. Actual results: Impress hangs. If Orca is not running, the hang does not occur. I'm using OOo 2.4 that ships with Ubuntu Hardy.
Since I seem to be the only one who can repro this bug -- and since I can also repro it with the current OOo 3.0 dev snapshot -- I'm assigning this one to myself. Though I'll probably wait until the Ubuntu Hardy release (in a week or so) because I'll wipe and reinstall at that point. Maybe the hang will just magically vanish. :-)
I just tried this in Intrepid with OOo 2.4. If I follow the steps *exactly* as outlined in my report, Impress will hang.
Adding Rich's name to the bug for one last (in)sanity check before I try to figure out how on earth we're managing reliably to hang Impress, but only if Orca happens to be running on one of *my* machines. ;-) Thank you Rich!
Created attachment 111677 [details] Orca debug output generated whilst testing this problem. I've attached the Orca debug generated whilst not crashing when testing this problem. This is with OOo Impress 2.4 on Ubuntu Hardy. Perhaps Will and Mike can try this too.
Created attachment 111680 [details] Proof I'm not making this up. ;-) See around line 2075.
I repeated the steps and could not reproduce this with Orca/gail/at-spi/atk from trunk and OpenOffice 2.4 on my Solaris Nevada b87 x86 system with Vermillion 90 (GNOME 2.22.0) bits. For grins I pressed Alt+N/Alt+B alternately until the cows came home. They mooed and Impress continued to sing.
Well, now, Will.... Between Orca talking and that technobucolic cacophony perhaps you simply failed to *hear* the hang. ;-) The culprit (or rather the fix) lies somewhere in Ubuntu's openoffice.org metapackage. When you install a fresh copy of Ubuntu you get OOo, but taking a look in synaptic, you don't get this metapackage. With the metapackage installed, I cannot reproduce the hang. That much I know. I also know that it is not sufficient merely to install the Sun jre: In trying to get to the bottom of this issue, I noticed that I didn't have a jre listed in the Options dialog (although the checkbox to use a jre was checked). Installing the jre (and even logging out for good measure) didn't cause a jre to show up in the list -- and the hang persisted. So my suspicion is that there's something java-y/jre-y that's in the metapackage but not being installed automatically due to a license or some similar such nonsense. And my theory is that the reason I suffer from this problem and Rich doesn't is because he tends to be more cautious when it comes to bleeding edge installs and doesn't "start from scratch" nearly as often as I do. :-) It's 2 AM so I'm going to call it quits for the night. But once I work out exactly what the wayward package is, is this: a. An OOo bug? b. An Ubuntu package request? c. A stick-it-on-the-wiki-and-be-done-with-it thang?
Okay, I spent some time today removing the meta package, the jre, etc., etc. And I cannot reproduce the hang after having installed the meta package; I can only reproduce it with fresh installs. As a result of this, it seems to me that the amount of time and labor which will likely be required to pinpoint the exact package whose presumed absence is causing the hang will exceed the benefit of having the answer. The quick and easy solution is to install the aforementioned meta package. Therefore, I have added an item to the OpenOffice page of our wiki (http://live.gnome.org/Orca/OpenOffice) suggesting this solution should one find the presentation wizard hanging. Closing this bug out as NOTGNOME.
