Description Sebastien Bacher 2008-03-18 10:27:42 UTC
The bug has been opened on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200462

"Binary package hint: nautilus

When I copy files from a CD or DVD to my Home directory, the files that are copied are given read only permissions. Prior to Hardy, the user that copied the files would have read/write permissions.

Steps to reproduce:
1.) Burn a data cd or dvd
2.) Copy the files to your Desktop or Home directories
3.) The files that were saved will be read only"

Hey

I can confirm exactly the same problem on my 3 computers
I'm surprised this bug has not been confirmed ...

I can confirm this problem on Ubuntu Hardy too. I find this bug very annoying particularly for new users.

I confirmed this bug on 5 computers running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS

The workaround (going through the Properties/Permissions, and adding full access for both folders and files of the Owner, THEN clicking to apply recursively) is not intuitive.

In addition, having the UI show a padlock gives the impression that only root can access those files.

Furthermore, when the user erases such a folder (with subfolders) (is moved to Trash), then it is not possible to expunge the Trash. The user is stuck with a non-empty Trash.

What I see is good to have, is when copying data to the user's home folder, to add by default write permission to the owner of the copied files.

reassigning to nautilus, when discussed on IRC that was pointed as something to change there rather
