It would be very useful if searching for words like "árbol" would match "arbol" as well.

Seconded; many other programs (and Google search) are usefully "accent blind" when they search.

It would also be useful to not distinguish between a "-" (minus used as a dash) and a longer, "real" dash.

Probably this can be expanded as doing more fuzzy searches in general.

I am not sure whether there is an option in Pango for this kind of search. 
Otherwise, it might worth to take a look at:
