Description Aaron Isotton 2008-03-02 17:51:36 UTC
I love the fact that banshee automatically converts tracks which can't be played on an iPod (e.g. ogg or flac) to mp3 when syncing.

I'd love it even more if I could specify the format and/or quality of the converted tracks. Currently, all tracks are encoded with MP3 and 128 kbit/s.

The iPod supports - among others - MP3, AAC/M4A, Apple Lossless audio file formats. It would be very useful if it supported more formats (open source AAC encoding libraries are available, I'm not sure about Apple Lossless). This might be a bit hard to implement; I'd be already very happy if one could specify the bitrate of the converted mp3s (I find 128kbit to be a bit too low).

This would also be the case for other removable devices, as noted downstream: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/banshee/+bug/182467.

We do not have iPod support in trunk - so...what version are you really filing this against?

Anyway, we do allow you to specify the bit rate etc (works in trunk for MTP and Mass Storage devices). I think this is INVALID.

Sorry, I was referring to 0.13.2. I know how to set the encoding parameters for the tracks imported from CD, but there is no way to set the format used when a non-iPod compatible track is converted for iPod.

Example:

1. Drag a flac file into banshee
2. The flac track is correctly copied into the library
3. Attach an iPod
4. Sync the iPod
5. The flac track - which is unsupported by the iPod - is converted to an mp3 (which is great). The mp3 is stored in the same directory as the original flac with a name starting with '.banshee-dap'

You cannot set the encoding parameters for step 5. I would like to be able to:

a) Select the codec
b) Select the bitrate in case of mp3. Other parameters may be necessary for other formats.

Thanks for your efforts,
Aaron

Right click on the device and choose Properties. You should be able to edit the encoder settings there. Please reopen if that's not the case.
Comment 5 Aaron Isotton 2008-04-24 00:24:12 UTC
Sorry, I only have "Rename" and "Eject" in the context menu. No properties. Also, the "Properties" menu entry in the "File" menu is disabled.

All the best,
Aaron

This is working for me in svn trunk, and I believe has been working since 1.2 or maybe even before.
