GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 509144
No confirmation when accidentally hitting delete ('send to trash')
Last modified: 2008-01-13 23:16:33 UTC
Accidentally hitting the DELETE key moves the selected file(s) to trash. Nautilus has no option to prevent this data destroying event (and has no 'undo' either). I request the *addition* of a "ask confirmation before sending to trash" option. Users often read the available option "ask confirmation to empty trash or deleting files" as "ask confirmation before moving a file to trash", but both are different things (translations for that option could obscure the exact phrasing). Still, the end user needs a confirmation when sending-to-trash, which doesn't exist in Nautilus yet. Confusion between "it does not do what I want" and "it does exactly what is says" may have contributed to this not getting added to Nautilus: this problem has been brought up many times before, but... ...dit not get confirmed, september 2005: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316807 ...is still new, october 2003: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=125087 ...was declared invalid, november 2007: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/162225

Tom, thanks for the report, but opening duplicate bugs for known issues or requests that have been already made just increase the work for bug triagers. If you want to raise a particular request CC or comment on the relevant bug report or otherwise write to nautilus-list@gnome.org.
