GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 506953
SMTP '550 relay not permitted' presented as 'Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable'
Last modified: 2012-02-18 09:21:37 UTC
SMTP '550 relay not permitted' is presented to the user in a dialog with the text: RCPT TO <recipient@example.org> failed: Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable Suggest presenting a better description of the problem to the user, perhaps suggesting they check their SMTP settings (as was the fix in my case). Other information:
Evolution just displays the error message that it receives from the server. The error message itself is NOT generated or altered by Evolution. Closing as NOTGNOME.
That's the point - it *doesn't* display the error message from the server. At least, it didn't in 2008...
So how do you know what should have been the server message? Did another mail application provide another error message for the same settings?
How do I know the SMTP error was what is above? Packet sniffer most likely.
550 can have several reasons (e.g. the both mentioned in this report). Just a "Error 550" in a package sniffer won't really help you clarify. Anyway...
