GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 502665
Message preview locks up in Formatting message (...)
Last modified: 2008-03-16 21:56:47 UTC
Please describe the problem: When you have a combination of: a) an message that has URL linked images in it b) display images only for messages sent by someone in your address book c) remote (i.e. not local network fast) LDAP address books d) possibly remote LDAP books need to be enabled for auto-completion messages that have (remote URL) images in them will frequently lock up the preview pane with the status bar (i.e. that message space to the left of the offline/online icon) reporting "Formatting message (...)". In the above list, (d) might not be necessary, but I believe a-c are. Steps to reproduce: 1. configure a remote LDAP server 2. configure evolution to only show images for senders in an address book 3. start reading e-mails with remote image URLs in them Actual results: Message preview pane no longer shows new content as you move from message to message. One can still double-click messages to open them in their own window and the body will be rendered in that window. Expected results: Message previews continue to work as normal. Does this happen every time? Pretty much. Other information: I have reported this bug many times over the last few years. I don't know why it keeps getting ignored. Other people have confirmed the bug too. Others simply disable image loading at all to prevent this problem. Is disabling a usability feature really the solution to having a bug in it that has been around and reported many times in years?
I've had this problem for some time aswell using exchange connector. I think it has something to do with Global Address List. I tried disabling it, now I get a popup asking for password for GAL at every mail I reply to, or create new, but reading mail works fine at least, so far... removed the GAL server configuration a little while ago, no formatting message lockups since then. Stacktrace shows do_get_contacts() function that looked suspicous so trying it out.
