i think the icon of download manager would an status indicator.
especially, if the dock is used [1].

Please use a clearer summary.

Do you mean that you want the download icon to be dynamic (like the nautilus copying progress icon)?

The just committed bug #618443 (new downloads UI) makes this bug(s) obsolete.
