In the initial printing dialog (#1), you select the paper size, orientation, etc, and then press the "Print" button.

This brings up a second dialog (#2), where you select the printer, and then press a second "Print" button.

After a few seconds, the gtk print status dialog appear, counting off pages 1, 2, 3, ...

During that time, dialog #1 remains visible and it is possible to click on its "Print" button. Doing so causes gthumb to freeze. It has to be killed.

Dialog #1 should be closed before #2 appears, or it should be made inactive, I think.
