Most likely you are using an outdated copy of libexif on your Ubuntu system. Please update to 0.6.16 or newer, then report back.

Leon, are your images coming from an Olympus camera?

The built-in image viewers in Windows Vista and Windows XP are known to destroy the EXIF MakerNote data from some camera models when you rotate the image. After manipulating the image with these Windows programs, some parts of the JPEG file contain garbage and invalid offsets. Old versions of libexif (used by GIMP) were crashing when trying to parse this invalid data. If this is the case for you, then you need to upgrade to a newer version of libexif (at least 0.6.15, or newer if possible).

I also recommend that you never use the Windows image viewer for rotating your images, because some parts of the image metadata related to camera settings will be destroyed and will not be recoverable.

YES! Great!
I updated libexif and now it works. THANKS!

ps: it was not so easy to convince GIMP to use the new version...
