One frustrating thing about using KDE/Gnome is that it makes assumptions as to the preferred paper size, understandable given the European context though. Almost all the first pages I've printed out the first time I've used an app cause the print job to fail since North Americans don't use the A4 paper size. I think a better way to go would be to check against the default printer and pick that size for the default instead.

The correct solution is really to use libpaper.

libpaper does not sound portable, getting the default paper from GtkPrint may be, if we depend on a new enough version
