Description Jani Patokallio 2007-09-04 12:57:50 UTC
Attempting to open the attached image with Gimp 2.2.13 on Windows Vista crashes jpeg.exe. The image renders fine with MS Paint and other tools I tried.

Other pictures from the same camera render fine, but the camera's card writer is a bit dodgy, so there's probably some corruption in there. Crashing in response is still not very nice...

Never mind -- I upgraded to 2.2.17, and now the file loads perfectly.

The image was taken by an Olympus camera and the crash was caused by the old version of libexif that was used by previous GIMP versions. Since this is a duplicate of an existing bug, I will close this one again with the proper resolution.

Note: the reason why this image crashes old GIMP versions is that its EXIF metadata is actually broken. The original image straight from the camera could probably be loaded without any problems. But in this case, it appears that the image has been modified by Microsoft Windows Photo Gallery 6.0. That program has incorrectly modified the EXIF block, resulting in invalid file offsets and other bugs. Newer GIMP versions depend on a more robust version of libexif and will not crash while loading the image, but some parts of its EXIF metadata (the Olympus MakerNote section) cannot be salvaged. The best solution is to avoid processing your images with Photo Gallery or to request a fix from Microsoft.
