Description totem 2007-08-15 22:55:32 UTC
Recently I tried to play a *.wmv file with totem 1.5.91 on SUSE 10.0 with Gnome 2.12.0
Normally I have no problems, but with this particular *.wmv file I received the following error message:
(-) Totem could not play '*.wmv'.
Video codec 'WVC1' is not handled. You might need to install additional plugins to be able to play some types of movies

I tried with Window Media Player 9 on Windows 2000 SP4. similar error.
there is information about this WVC1 here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/howto/articles/codecadvancedsettings.aspx
and a posible download for Windows Media Player here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx

I know I don't have the latest totem version (2.18.2)...
QUESTION: is there a plugin for WVC1 'infected' media? or does a later version of totem cover this type of *.wmv files?
Thanks for any reply you can give.	- Mark W

Given the error message, I guess you're using the xine-lib backend. You'll need to file a bug against xine-lib following the instructions at:
http://www.gnome.org/projects/totem/#bugs

In the meanwhile, I'll pass on this bug onto GStreamer.

Pitfdll might be able to use the DLL supplied in Microsoft's bundle. For a download link, see:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=111633
To file a bug against pitfdll, go to:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pitfdll/

There's samples at:
http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/samples/V-codecs/WVC1/

gstreamer-ffmpeg can probably handle it (badly) too, given this MPlayer commit:
http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mplayer-cvslog/2006-October/027126.html

Passing this on to gst-ffmpeg as it lives in GNOME bugzilla as well.

This is definitely fixed upstream.

asfdemux will now properly report the proper mimetype for these codecs thanks to this fix to gst-plugins-base:

2007-12-03 Edward Hervey <bilboed@bilboed.com>

	* gst-libs/gst/riff/riff-media.c: (gst_riff_create_video_caps):
Add 'WVC1' codec mapping for Windows Media VC-1 video codec.

Thanks a lot. Exactly what is the name of the plug-in?
and exactly where (URL) do I get it?

"fixed upstream" means in ffmpeg. If you want to try it, you need to grab the GST_FFMPEG_NO_MIRROR branch of gst-ffmpeg (which will become trunk after the upcoming gst-ffmpeg release).

You will also need a cvs head version of gst-plugins-base.
Comment 5 Edward Hervey 2007-12-17 12:47:26 UTC
fixed thanks to new build system.

Thanks a lot for your efforts.
Sorry, but I am not quite sure what you mean,
Is there an .rpm or .tar for this?
and exactly where (URL) do I get it?

PLEASE !!!!! The fact that you don't know how to use cvs doesn't give you the right to re-open a closed bug. Wait for gst-ffmpeg-0.10.4 and gst-plugins-base-0.10.16 to be released !
