GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 46310
Copying directory when directory exists at destination should offer to "merge"
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
[blatant feature request] If I copy a directory to a destination containing a directory of the same name, it should offer to "merge" the directories, and prompt for skip/replace for each identical file. ------- Additional Comments From sullivan@eazel.com 2001-02-05 10:53:45 ---- Merging is what Windows does with all directories, I believe. The Mac (and Be, I think) replace instead. Each has pros and cons. Maybe we can get the best of both somehow, but definitely not before 1.0. ------- Additional Comments From mikef@praxis.etla.net 2001-02-06 11:44:17 ---- The NEXTSTEP Workspace Manager prompts for merging or replacing :) ------- Additional Comments From pavel@eazel.com 2001-03-15 16:52:52 ---- supporting merge during copy/move operations opens a huge can of worms - for one thing it is hard to resolve conflicts before starting the actual copy operation without doing a costly traverse of both the source and destination trees. We would probably have to present the conflict dialogs as the copy progresses which would not be so great. ------- Additional Comments From snickell@stanford.edu 2001-07-23 00:35:43 ---- Taking bugs previously assigned to Pavel, assigning them to myself. Will parse them out at my leisure , but many are GnomeVFS bugs we should look at for 2.0 ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2001-09-09 20:58 -------
Changing to "old" target milestone for all bugs laying around with no milestone set.
This still happens. As mikef points out, the UI for merging would be simple so it's probably just a matter of getting the merge to work.
