GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 461912
GIMP freezes on start-up
Last modified: 2008-01-15 13:29:26 UTC
Please describe the problem: Recently got a new laptop and installed the GIMP. Everything operated perfectly until I installed the help files and the gimp-gap animation package, now whenever i start the gimp it freezes when it gets to "Looking for data files, Fonts" for several minutes. I have checked for previous bug reports and found that the problem is NOT due to the .fonts.cache-1 file, or at least the prescribed solution does not work. I'm pretty sure i cannot be the only one with this problem because i had it on my old laptop also, (it was xp this is Vista). Steps to reproduce: 1. Attempt to start the GIMP normally. Actual results: The GIMP appears to start normally until it gets to "Searching for files", "Fonts" (from the progress it appears to be mid-way through the process). It then continues as if nothing happened. If i click on the window while the progress appears to be stopped i get a message stating that the program is not responding and that i can either close the program, or wait for it to respond. Expected results: I would expect the gimp to start normally without being told it is "Not responding" Does this happen every time? Yes. Other information: As stated above, I also had the same (or very similar) problem with my old laptop, which i (mistakenly) attribute to the laptop being old and slow. the only thing that has changed since the program has started normally was the installation of the gimp-gap pluggin and the help files. I hope i haven't filed this in the wrong place however as the problem asserts itself before either of those are used in any way, i have placed it here. I have previously installed other add-ons (such as resysnthesiser) without any problems
This is definitely nothing but the usual font cache problem and the FAQ explains how to handle it. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 154968 ***
