When you select a group, you get a Group menu item in the edit menu.
When you select a contact, you get a Contact menu item in the edit menu.
When nothing is selected, you get none of those menu items.

Really, the items should not appear/disappear but should be set sensitive/insensitive. Else, you can't expect people to know about them.
