i have windows vista so I'm not sure if GIMP has compatibility issues with vista
but when i start GIMP it loads everything until it gets to load the fonts where it freezes and crashes
...if there is a patch or if you could fix this, that would be great

A dealy is expected, because the font cahce file is created. Crashes may be caused by broken font files.

You didn't tell us much about your crash though...

If GIMP freezes the first time it starts, then this is most likely a duplicate of bug #378153.  Some users of Windows Vista have reported that the first start can require more than 30 minutes during which the libraries used by GIMP are scanning all fonts on the system.

If GIMP freezes after having been successfully started several times, then this is a duplicate of bug #154968.

If GIMP crashes (with an error dialog), then this may be a new bug.  In this case, please specify the exact error message that you see on your screen.

Please tell us if your GIMP really crashes or if it simply waits for a very long time.

Adam, I doubt that you are using GIMP 2.2.0. 2.2.17 is the current stable release.
