GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 447300
Cannot change wireless network settings and connect
Last modified: 2008-08-08 21:20:59 UTC
Please describe the problem: While trying to connect to my wireless network, I started with no encryption and then moved to WEP and finally to WPA personal. I found that each time I had to reload the entire os (Ubuntu 7.04) in order for it to work Steps to reproduce: 1. Connect to a wireless network unencrypted 2. Change the wireless network to run WEP 3. Try to connect to the wireless network 4. Reload the os 5. Connect Actual results: It works until I change the network configuration Expected results: Does this happen every time? Yes Other information: Another bug from another user - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=472583
Confirming, this happened to me as well after upgrading from WEP to WPA. However, reinstalling the OS not really needed. The problem is that the stored key (in gnome-keyring) is endlessly tried, of course without luck. The result is an endlessly spinning "Connecting to $ESSID" icon. NetworkManager should notice that authentication failed and ask the user for a new key. I'm no expert on WLAN, so I'm not sure you can figure out for sure the authentication failed. Either way, if the type of encryption changes, e.g. from WEP to WPA, NetworkManager can now for sure the old key is no longer valid.
