Hi thanks for the response. I am running ubuntu edgy with automatic updates applied. I had assembled a list of files to burn and pressed write to disk. A message box appeared asking if it was OK to disable microsoft compatibility as some file names were not suitable i clicked yes. then the burner progress bar appeared but only showed the right most 1cm of content, the rest had a shadowed progress bar and no text. DMESG has no output pertinant, though it would need to open the device? syslog has no message, no further activity occurred
