This is with Ubuntu 7.04.

Summary : 

The ubuntu trash folder is /home/username/.Trash/
Deleting a photo in digikam goes in /home/username/.local/share/Trash/files/

It would seems that digikam (kdelibs) follows freedesktop guidelines but not Gnome. Result : I have a gig of photos in the /home/username/.local/share/Trash/files/ folder that is not in the Gnome trash.
