Description Andrew Gee 2007-06-09 10:25:09 UTC
I think a tray icon should be implemented to hide the email client when not in use. There is mail-notification, but this doesn't integrate into evolution enough. I think there should be a tray icon the behaves like banshee's or xchat's.

The icon should flash or change if an email is received also.
Comment 1 Pacho Ramos 2007-10-08 18:54:46 UTC
I think that this is fixed with latest evolution
Comment 2 Danny Armstrong 2007-10-18 19:08:42 UTC
This means to say they have added a 'minimize to tray' (it appears Gnome calls this the 'notification area' utility of the panel) type feature? I'll assume yes.

A simple/prototype StatusIcon plugin

I attached a very simple plugin for this.
Issues with the installed _HEADERS and targeted evolution version I required this to work with made it not really possible to build it outside of the source tree. It should help to discuss requirements as SVN currently has no such "trayicon" mechanism.

evolution-statusicon packages in my repo if anyone want's to test (openSUSE):

I would like to have a status icon in the next stable version of evolution.

The only workaround is to use alltray. But in Ubuntu 7.10 alltray is buggy, when compiz is enabled. So this is no solution for me. The best thing would be a status icon as plug in in evolution.
Comment 5 Andrew Gee 2007-11-11 16:00:04 UTC
I'd like to see evolution have a status icon that allows evolution to be hidden to the notification tray and not just be minimised. When an email is received, the icon should flash, like the one currently. Clicking on the icon would bring evolution back up.

That would be a massive feature to me, as I like the same feature in banshee.

Adds an Evolution icon to notification area to hide/show shell(s) - 0.0.2

This one adds a popup menu for the statusicon.

Sankar, A nice one to be maintained in the plugins section. I see too many question on this at many places. May not be a default plugin. (Since this is not withGNOME HIG - http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/desktop-notification-area.html.en)
Comment 8 Srinivasa Ragavan 2007-12-19 07:55:21 UTC
I would say that make it as a rpm using OBS (OpenSUSE Build Service) or something which users can install and use. I won't vote it to be in the default repository. Unless, I get so many complaints for it.

I wanted to add a bug about tray icon but I found this bug. Could it be added to main repo as a plugin?
Comment 10 Kandepu Prasad 2008-08-21 08:49:54 UTC
Downstream bug
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=164426

This has to be closed once it is fixed.
Comment 11 Matthew Barnes 2008-08-21 12:43:03 UTC
GNOME does not have a system tray like Windows, and our policy is not use abuse the notification area as though it were a system tray.
Comment 12 damidalla 2008-08-21 13:50:41 UTC
I am not a developer and I am not really into Gnome HIG discussions. I use GNU/Linux - and Gnome - from 2005, and I started to use Evolution a year ago hearing a plugin was being developed that should have fixed this bug.
I do not know if Gnome HIG are so strict (I did remember it was permitted to have a program in the notification area if it was only a non-default option, but I can be wrong). I only know that one of my workspaces always has an open window of Evolution, only to keep me informed of new mail, and it seems to me particularly unintuitive.
I can understand the need to keep the notification area clean, but I really can not understand the refusal to offer any other possibility - a panel applet, or something else.

Quick note for those who really really want/need it (like myself):

I'm not sure - but is it possible to have a evolution process checking mail in the background?
