GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 441658
Move workspace settings in Windows preferences tool
Last modified: 2020-11-07 12:15:59 UTC
After reading a preview of Apple Spaces[1] features and viewing this screenshot[2] for its preferences, I'm starting to belive that GNOME should move workspace settings from switcher applet properties to Windows preferences tool. Good reasons for this change: * workspace switcher properties dialog should change only applet apperance and behavior, as well as properties dialogs for other applets * workspaces are global desktop feature, so should be managed in desktop preferences * workspaces setting should be accessed and modified by several window managers (metacity, compiz...), so could be useful provide a place to setup basic stuff for all window managers About the last reason, note that currently, on some distro like Ubuntu Feisty, the Windows preferences tool is yet used to set up settings for both Metacity and Comiz. Created attachment 88903 [details] The workspaces setting in hypothetical "Windows and Workspaces" preferences tool Some UI ideas come from Apple tool, as well as the idea to bind an application to a workspace (yes, it's a missing feature in libwnck, but could be really interesting). Also note the "Shortcuts" buttons, to open the shotcuts related preferences tool.
BTW, here is a video showing Spaces settings in action. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIfprWc_BBU
Luca: this makes some sense to me. Want to propose this to gnomecc-list?

Well, one problem is that it seems that Windows preferences disappeared from the default configuration of Fedora 12 (not sure before that), so moving them in Windows would effectively hide them from many users not willing or able to add Windows to their preferences. Quick question: is there a way to setup the configuration of the workspaces manually (as the preferences in the applet seem not to be working)? Thanks, M.

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old feature requests in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years. If you still use gnome-panel and if you are still requesting this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-panel/-/issues/ Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be implemented.
