Description Benedict Sgro 2007-02-27 17:48:03 UTC
Open filesfrom a network drive and be able to save them back to the network drive.

To open files stored on a central network drive shared between 2 computers in Gnucash requires copying the file from the network drive into the home directory & then open it from Gnucash. When data entry is complete the file has to be saved back to the home directory & copied back to the network drive.

I mounted the network drive to my home directory & opened the file & entered data, but the file was deleted when I tried to save it to the mounted network drive.

Huh? This should indeed be possible; if it's not, it is a bug. Can you please explain the technical details: What kind of "Network drive" is this: Samba/SMB (see bug#352491)? Or NFS? Or any other network file system? We need to know the details in order to fix it. Thank you very much.
Comment 2 Benedict Sgro 2007-03-03 03:52:22 UTC
Christian,

The network is Samba/SMB.

The network disk is mounted as cifs.

Running Suse v10.2 (64 bit version), GnuCash v2.02.

When I first tried this I had mounted the network drive using the mount.cifs command from the command line. I have since included into my /etc/fstab file.

I have been able to open & save files from the network drive in Open Office & K3BDVD/CD programs.

Please send all future e-mail responses to sgrofamily@verizon.net. If you need some other info please advise.

Thanks

Ben

Christian,

Went to bug #352491. I get the similar error message the first time I opened the file from the network drive. It appears that the file wasn't being deleted in the in this case.

Christian,

I had a friend who is running the 32 bit version of Suse 10.2 attempt to load a file from inside GnuCash and he has similar problems. It appears that the problem exists in both 32 and 64 bit versions of GnuCash.

I am having the same problem in gnucash 2.2.6 r17427 2008-08-01 in fedora 9:

When I try to open a gnucash file in an external drive mounted as cifs, a message box with the following message appears:"gnucash could not obtain the lock for <path for the gnucash file>". I press the "open anyway" button, and gnucash shows the file contents, but the file itself is deleted from the network drive (also, .LCK or .LNK files are NOT created ). When I press "save", only .log files are written. This means the gnucash file is lost.

I have tried gnucash portable 2.2.6 in windows vista, and it is able to correctly write the file in the network drive, so the problems seems to be only for linux.

Is there any extra information I could sent in order to help debugging it?

Hector

This is a serious problem. Unfortunately I'm unable to reproduce it so far. I can't even say for sure if this bug is a duplicate of bug #352491 or not.

I'm hoping to extract some more information from your setups.

Can you tell me what operating system is running on the server side ?

And which commands exactly do you use to mount the shares on your local machine (you can mask usernames and passwords of course).

Also, can you
* run "gnucash --debug" from the command line
* open the file on the mounted samba share
* make some changes
* save the file back
* close gnucash
After which step exactly does the file disappear from the samba share (check this both on the local machine as on the server itself).

And then attach /tmp/gnucash.trace to this bugreport.

Is anybody still having this problem with recent versions of GnuCash (like 2.3.16) ?

I can't reproduce this.

You will most likely not be able to reproduce this problem if you have a
standard network hard drive.

My configuration consists of a USB hard drive connected to a Cisco
Systems NSLU2 which is plugged into my Verizon modem which then networks
my computer. The NSLU2 transfers the data from the USB over the network
to my PC. Reading and writing data to and from this hard drive is not a
problem in Windows.

I'm sorry, I couldn't deduce the answer to my question from your reply: can you still reproduce this with GnuCash 2.3.16 or more recent ?

If so, can you please provide some additional feedback as I requested in comment 6 ?
