I can confirm this bug is upstream.

On a Gentoo system with full GNOME 2.16.3, running the recently released Evolution 2.8.3, this bug _just_ appeared.

This is a regression from 2.8.2.1 where this problem was not present. Evidently it was introduced in the patches between the two.

It is *really* annoying.

If it is present in both stable and unstable, I don't know what the best field settings for Version and GNOME version are.

Confirming the bug also here, on evolution-2.8.3, this seems to be solved in 2.10.x
