Description Bruno Boaventura 2007-01-30 02:36:38 UTC
In some older versions it works, but not in 2.17.90.
Comment 1 Paolo Bacchilega 2007-02-05 18:29:45 UTC
File Roller now uses the xds protocol for drag and drop operations, on the other hand Nautilus does not support this protocol yet, this is why DnD doesn't work.

It is nice to know the reason, but what's important is: could you (nautilus developers, file-roller developers, I don't care) quickly fix this problem?

This is a HUGE regression, and IMHO just this problem offset every other improvement in the transition from Gnome 2.16 to Gnome 2.18. I can't understand how you allowed file-roller to use this XDS protocol if nautilus can't support it, in the past changes less intrusive than this one were rolled back before the stable Gnome release.

Seems like users are getting bitten by the removal of a useful feature. Do we have any idea when this is going to be integrated into nautilus? If it's not going to be in 2.20, might it make sense to temporarily revert the change?
Comment 9 Matthew Wardrop 2007-06-11 23:02:33 UTC
How does that explain it not being able to drag'n'drop to itself? Is there some other fundamental reason?

I really try to understand the plan behind this implementation but I can't.

This is like intentionally breaking file roller - nautilus (and thus desktop) integration.

Since I don't see a solution in the near future - its like 5 months since this bug was reported - my solution is to go back to 2.16.3.

Keep on the good work on breaking gnome desktop - gnome applications integration.
Comment 11 Christopher Aillon 2007-06-12 14:37:26 UTC
The plan makes sense in general. Drag and drops will happen much faster when both file-roller and nautilus implements it. The problem is that nautilus hasn't implemented it, and it as of right now looks unlikely to happen for 2.20. So, we should support the old way until nautilus catches up.
Comment 12 Christopher Aillon 2007-06-12 14:40:29 UTC
We should be able to see if we find the XdndDirectSave0 atom, and if not, fall back to the old-style dnd. If so, we can continue using the xds protocol.

There's also an Ubuntu bug about this here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/133014

I have the same problem... It's irritating! So many releases of gnome since the bug has occured for the first time, and no fixes...

It works here with 2.20.1. The bug should be closed.

Not at all... Dropping to a nautilus window with list view selected doesn't work
Comment 19 Aleksi Räsänen 2007-11-09 09:53:32 UTC
Yep, it does not work if I use "List view mode" in Nautilus, but when I use Icon-mode in Nautilus, it works fine.

This still does not work in 2.22.2...
Comment 22 Ageorgo 2008-05-31 14:18:19 UTC
File Roller 2.22.2 can extract files by drag and drop. But this actually works only if the file is dragged on the desktop or into a Nautilus window which is in "View as Icons" mode. It does not work if the Nautilus window is in "View as List" mode.
Comment 23 Vadim Peretokin 2008-12-27 19:52:21 UTC
Confirming that DnD does not work in List View, but works in Compact and Icon views.

This bug is already fixed.

drag and drop does work with nautilus, but it doesn't work with gthumb
Comment 26 Paolo Benvenuto 2009-06-11 07:10:24 UTC
More precisely: you can drag and drop from gthumb to file-roller, but not from file-roller to gthumb
Comment 27 Paolo Bacchilega 2012-06-20 20:19:05 UTC
the end of story is that it was a nautilus bug(In reply to comment #24)
