Description whitis 2007-01-25 01:08:14 UTC
Distribution: Debian 4.0
Package: gnome-terminal
Severity: Normal
Version: GNOME2.14.3 2.14.2
Gnome-Distributor: Debian
Synopsis: crashes when exiting screensaver.
Bugzilla-Product: gnome-terminal
Bugzilla-Component: general
Bugzilla-Version: 2.14.2
BugBuddy-GnomeVersion: 2.0 (2.14.1)
Description:
Description of the crash:
This time Gnome-terminal crashed when redrawing after screensaver (or
sometime while I was asleep). ps confirms that bug-buddy launched
about the same time the screen saver was deactivated. I had 6 terminal
windows, one of which had 3 tabs. No programs should have been
actively writing to the screen except perhaps one running instance of
top and any error messages from any gui applications.
I had 1 gnome-terminal instance, with two additional threads, one
started on Jan 13, 3 seconds after the main process, and one started a
on Jan 17

Gnome-terminal crashes when doing nothing unusual are common, they
happen
every couple weeks. In this case, some of the windows had been open
for 11 days.
Since the uptime is 15 days, this is not the first crash since reboot.

Since gnome-terminal uses a single process to control all windows,
individual windows don't crash, they all crash simultaneously as well as
taking out most applications
which were launched from a terminal window (which is most of them).

The inclusion of bug buddy provided a major saving grace: Since the
process is not officially terminated until I finish writing this bug
report, I have had a chance to pull up
8 xmlcopyeditor, 1 oocalc, and 2 emacs windows and save my work before
they are killed.

One thing that was unusual for this session (I.E. spererate bug) is that
a day or two earlier, the second tab in the three tab window (two open
at the time) hung. The tab was closed and a new tab was opened which
inherited the hung state of the earlier tab
but a third tab was opened which was not hung.

Gnome terminal was used very heavily.

Steps to reproduce the crash:
Use gnome terminal for an extended period of time. It will die with
what apperas to b more frequency and definitely greater consequences
than xterm.

Expected Results:

How often does this happen?
Every week or two.
