GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 399878
Support for the jpeg comments
Last modified: 2021-06-20 09:02:42 UTC
This bug was filed in the Debian BTS. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=247417 "The jpeg standard provides a way to add a comment. You can use the utility jhead or gimp 2.0 to manage it. Could be nice if eog manage it and/or show it among the exif data and on the fullscreen of the images." This is a very old Debian bug, but it still seems to be valid. At least the comments I set with jhead does not seem to be visible in eog.
This would be a good candidate for a future plugin (after we have our plugin system in place, of course). I don't think it's worth putting this in EOG's core.
As far as I can see, eog still doesn't support JPEG comments. This is irritating: one of the most frequent things I want to do with JPEGs I put on my web site is add a comment (which the web site program automatically extracts to use in my photo galleries). This seems to be a perfectly standard bit of JPEG metadata, and despite reading in some places that eog at least supports its display, I can't find anywhere in eog 2.28.0 where I can find the comment of a JPEG that I know contains one.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/eog/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
