GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 395566
user manual contains non-free copyright license
Last modified: 2013-09-10 14:04:48 UTC
Yavor Doganov <yavor@doganov.org> reported at http://bugs.debian.org/406337: The user manual /usr/share/gnome/help/evolution-2.6/C/evolution-2.6.xml contains the following copyright notice: ,---- | Copyright © 2005-2006 Novell, Inc. All rights reserved. No part | of this publication may be reproduced, photocopied, stored on a | retrieval system, or transmitted without the express written consent | of the publisher. `---- I see that COPYING-DOCS in the tarball contains GFDL (and it is present in the "help" directory in SVN trunk) so this might be some kind of mistake. Since this notice totally contradicts with the spirit of GNU FDL it is not clear what the actual license is. The problem Yavor reported makes it a Release Critical problem for Debian. What we need to get an exception to release is a statement saying the copyright notice is a mistake and it should be GFDL and will be fixed. Hope this can be dealt with quickly..

It is indeed a mistake - the documentation from an Novell Internal Release having been ported upstream w/o change. Radhika : poke

can this please also be fixed for 2.6?
sure:-)
Radhika : are we working on fixing the 2.6 docs as well ?
I will remove the following ,---- | Copyright © 2005-2006 Novell, Inc. All rights reserved. No part | of this publication may be reproduced, photocopied, stored on a | retrieval system, or transmitted without the express written consent | of the publisher. `---- and upload the same if it is really necessary. Let me have your thoughts
If you're from Novell, this sounds like a good plan!
:)
fixed for 2.10 by this commit here: http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/evolution/trunk/help/C/evolution.xml?r1=33017&r2=33239 not fixed for 2.8 and 2.6 yet.
I'd like to ask for an upload to the 2.6 branch too. It should be very straightforward, but has to be done by someone from Novell.

2007-03-02 Karsten Bräckelmann <guenther@rudersport.de> * C/evolution.xml: Corrected copyright statement as per bug 395566.
Backported and committed the copyright statements to both gnome-2-14 and gnome-2-16 branch. As per comment 2 by Harish, the Evolution maintainer, this is indeed a mistake and should have been the GFDL, as explained in comment 0. (In reply to comment #11) > I'd like to ask for an upload to the 2.6 branch too. It should be very > straightforward, but has to be done by someone from Novell. Øystein, please note that I am not affiliated with Novell. However, it is my understanding that this of course is a screw up. Regarding comment 0, IMHO, comment 2 should be sufficient for a statement by Novell employees, in this case the maintainer. With this patch in, you should not need any exception to release Evolution as part of Debian. Since there won't be any new tarballs for these branches, please feel free to apply the above official patches to the already released tarballs. Closing RESOLVED FIXED.
Øystein : I guess the patch still awaits a commit to allow a few other fixes to be included - but the licence issue has set right with the existing patch. You can proceed to release Evolution with this patch. It was just a mistake that the Novell Documentation license got in the way of GFDL- I am speaking for both the Evolution project and Novell here. Srini/Radhika : Can we get at least the license changes committed to the 2-14 branch latest by tonight/tomorrow. Thanks.
I have updated Evo 2.6 user guide and submitting the XML herewith. The graphics changes comes to 6 MB which can not be uploaded here. All the previous fixes has been gone into the Doc.

I cannot upload the graphics herewith. I can mail you across the graphics if you would like me to do so:) Sorry for the delay:(
Evolution is uploaded to Debian with the new patch, and will most likely make it for the etch release. Thanks to everyone who have involved themselves in fixing this.

radhika: wasn't this only about correcting the license? what new graphics? for what? even if, they should be in SVN so everybody can use them.
(In reply to comment #22) > radhika: wasn't this only about correcting the license? what new graphics? for > what? Andre, what radhika did was, she back ported a lot of fixes from the DOC Testing we did on Evolution 2.10 manual to 2.6 as well as 2.8. These include new screenshots, image corrections etc. The 2.10 is committed to HEAD. The 2.8 awaits some more love to be committed. 2.6 is ready to be committed. Got it? > even if, they should be in SVN so everybody can use them. > They will be committed to SVN. Blame me for that, I havent setup gnome-2-14 branch yet from svn. I will do that tomorrow.
/me hugs srini for the explanation. thanks, pal. got it. :-)
I have committed all the images/Makefile.am changes to gnome-2-14. This helped me to commit the Makefile.am changes that I missed in HEAD. Im sure that the same has to be done for gnome-2-16.
