As far as I found out the above reported problem appeared after I installed the following updates of the Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy) distribution: libgnome-window-settings1_1%3a2.16.1-0ubuntu4.2_i386.deb capplets-data_1%3a2.16.1-0ubuntu4.2_all.deb gnome-control-center_1%3a2.16.1-0ubuntu4.2_i386.deb from the edgy-updates repository.
