GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 358321
The action triggered by a click on a link is unpredictable
Last modified: 2012-10-07 04:24:31 UTC
I find it very annoying that you're not given to know if a link you're going to click will replace the current page or, istead, open a new window (requiring you to manually switch to and close the previous one). I want to be _the one_ who decides if a link has to open in place or in a new window/tab (using the right-click menu or by middle/ctrl clicking it), or, at least, I'd like to be informed about where the link is going to open. Links behaviour should be predictable. I think that al lot of people asking for a "please-open-all-my-links-in-tabs" (mis)feature, in fact do so because of this annoyance. So I'd like Epiphany to show me if a link is going to open a new window and, optionally, open every link (the only exception being popups) "in place". I'm asking (on my humble knees:-) for 2 things: 1) A link with target="_blank" should open as if it were a target="_self" one. Popup windows should not be affected (that is they should open in new windows or be blocked, as usual). This is probably matter for a new extension. 2) If the Epiphany extension suggested above is not active, Epiphany should at least indicate that a link is a target="_blank" one, changing the mouse pointer to show a "+" symbol beside the arrow.
Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 358075 ***
Sorry, but I really can't see how my RFE (#358321) can be a duplicate of #358075. I'd like every link to be opened in place, *not* in tabs. (I don't even think tabs should be misused that way.) And, more importantly, the motivation behind my RFE is different: maybe a better title for it would be: "The action triggered by a click on a link is unpredictable". Notice that this is something that is not considered nor solved by #358075 at all. I propose 2 complementary solutions for this issue, and they both have nothing to do with tabs. Even if the RFE in #358075 is implemented (and I don't push for it to happen), a link still can (arbitrarily, in the user POV) open a new tab *or* load into the same one. You never know until you click on it. That's the problem! I hope you reconsider and reopen the bug (maybe retitled). Anyway, thanks for the fast replay and your work in Epiphany! PS: I think you marked them as duplicate because they are blocked by the same issues in Mozilla (now solved upstream?), but isn't that an implementation detail?
Request granted :)
Thanks, I'm happier now :-)
