deskbar is virtually the first app I use on every login. On Edgy Eft, I have the deskbar applet on the furthest bottom panel. Its already expanded (ready) to enter text into the field. It's been working fine *but* I really dislike having no control with gnome-search-tool so I thought I would have more control with Beagle. I installed Beagle through apt-get and went into Deskbar preferences by right clicking it's magnify icon. Unfortunately, Beagle wasn't available as an option so I Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart X. The second I got back in I went straight to Deskbar preferences. I now enabled Beagle and disable the file search option. Upon exiting the preferences window, the bug-buddy window popped up reporting a crash. I sent in the first report (not as verbose as this one) found here: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=360560 After the first crash and after closing the bug buddy window, I started typing into the Deskbar field and every character typed spawned a bug-buddy window. The problem didn't go away until I rebooted the box. After the reboot, Deskbar seems to be working just fine.
reopening as per last comment.

mikkel: *ping* - comment 19? :-) this is becoming a blocker - 24 duplicates in the last 30 days.
This is happening to me on my laptop running Edgy, but not on my desktop running edgy. (Same version that I update daily) That is IMO very very odd. I am able to reproduce this very easily and predictably every time. 1) type ALT-F3 2) type any number of keys and then pause for a movement. The app crashes and bug buddy appears. Type another character and pause, and I get bug buddy again. NOTE: If I change layout to "entry in panel" instead of the default "button in panel", I get NO crashes at all. This leads me to believe it is somehow related to the "button in panel" view somehow... If I can provide you with any more info, let me know.
comment 19 does not appear to be related to this bug. I'be been trying for half an hour to paste into deskbar (both views) in all sorts of wierd ways and I simply can't reproduce this. we can add a try/catch clause to the specific code but that seems to be fixing the symptoms not the cause....
The _only_ way the above error could happen is if the applet receives the release event of a middle click but not a press event (or that something resets the variable in between press and release). If there is not wild objection I will check that self.middle_click != null before we unpack x and y. I'll log a warning in case of a null middle_click...
cool, thanks in advance.
Yeah, I'm not sure how this is happening either, but the suggested workaround sounds OK to me.
Given that many of the submitters seem to be using Ubuntu, has anyone checked the extra patches Ubuntu applies to see if they are at fault?
Greg: I just checked the source package for Ubuntus deskbar-applet. They only do a trivial patch to the gdmactions.py (I don't know why they didn't upstream it).
Fix commited. Please confirm...
thanks a lot, mikkel! fix is at http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/deskbar-applet/deskbar/DeskbarApplet.py?r1=1.52&r2=1.52.2.1 adding sebastien to CC.
I've uploaded a package with that patch to edgy

Oh.I'll mark this as fixed. I have actually seen the warning I put instead of the crash a few times, but I cannot reproduce consistently. But since the warning appears from time to time we won't forget to think about a real fix. I'll put the fix in HEAD too.
forgot to mark fixed :-D
