GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 352453
Visualise "file is being written to" somehow
Last modified: 2012-08-14 22:59:27 UTC
Would it be possible to detect if a file is open for writing by something and cause it to have an emblem to represent that fact? This would be great to visualise file downloads and such. Would be nice if when copying a file from one disk to another, the icon for the new file throbbed in transparency or something. Additionally, Nautilus could warn the user when attempting to open a file that is currently open for writing by another process.
I guess the download/emblem part would be possible with some kind of integration with Mathusalem [1], but that isn't developed anymore and noone seems to have the time to pick it up yet. [1] http://live.gnome.org/Mathusalem
This is a major usability issue. I'd recommend making the file semi-transparent and having an emblem to indicate the kind of operation. This project could have the potential to provide this kind of functionality: http://live.gnome.org/SummerOfCode2010/SalomonSickert_Tasks
