GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 349925
Preferences menu item should be under Edit
Last modified: 2009-08-15 18:40:50 UTC
The HIG recommends that a Preferences menu item should be under the Edit menu. IIRC, it specifically recommends against having a Settings menu containing only one item.
I've always meant to add quick access for common prefs such as tabsize, wrap etc.
I'm not sure it's explicitly stated in the HIG, but I gather the general principle for application preferences is that they shouldn't be things you have to frequently change. Tab-size and wrap should perhaps go under the Edit menu, or a View menu?
Ok so we would delete the settings menu and have Edit -> Preferences View -> Tab Size (2,3,4,8) View -> Word Wrap (toggle) View -> Line Numbers (toggle) View -> Highlight -> (like gedit)
In gedit, all of these options are in the preferences dialog. (You can switch between highlight languages, but that's only in case gedit gets it wrong AFAIK. The main on/off switch is in prefs.) Are these really things a user will want to frequently change?
