GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 347564
evince fails to render some pdf documents
Last modified: 2006-10-02 16:36:51 UTC
Please describe the problem: I have been seeing more and more of this. Evince will just say loading forever and ever on many PDF files. If you try to ltrace it, it will crash before a window is displayed. Steps to reproduce: 1. Go to http://www.thespectrum.com/movies/movies.pdf 2. Watch it say loading 3. Wait until doomsday Actual results: You wait with a message "Loading" on the screen. Occasionally it will partially load, but never completely, never usably (the program more or less locks after displaying the little it will). Expected results: The pdf file should be displayed. Does this happen every time? Yes. Other information:
Thanks for the bug report. Could you add a stacktrace to this bug?
Program received signal SIGINT, Interrupt. 0xb7f44402 in __kernel_vsyscall () (gdb) back
+ Trace 69351
Rather uninteresting. I will try to get one with the actual program symbols. However, since it don't hang most of the time (only when it draws part of the page) I don't think it will get much more interesting.
What kind of computer are you using? How long did you wait before giving up? Do you see 100% CPU usage while Evince is loading the file? The example file opens fine for me, but takes a long time (around 10 seconds) on an AMD Athlon 64 3700+.
processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 6 model : 8 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2200+ stepping : 0 cpu MHz : 1797.372 cache size : 256 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow up ts bogomips : 3598.28 50-100% CPU utilization for 4+ minutes before it drew. This I do not understand. It used to come up in about 5 seconds. Acrobat does it quickly. Xpdf starts to render immediately and finishes in about 2 minutes. Isn't evince based on xpdf (poppler)? I have waited 20 minutes before and not had it render.
Still valid with recent poppler and evince. This looks like a bug with the PDF backend. Could you please follow these instructions to help get this bug fixed. Thank You. http://live.gnome.org/Evince/PopplerBugs#poppler
Just wanted to say I get this too. I've uploaded a screenshot to http://users.on.net/stickley/evince.png I have an AMD Athlon64 3400+ (2.4Ghz) running Ubuntu i386, and have 100% CPU utilisation while evince attempts to open many pdf files.
