Description Karl Lattimer 2006-06-19 20:30:10 UTC
Today I wanted to sync my address book onto my ipod. I managed to do this after some hacking around. Far from easy.

Heres how I think it should work. Generic export of vcf files as individual files for each contact card into a specific folder, various configurable locations for this would be cool, it would also be cool to have some sync was possible also, merging changes in both/all locations.

The way I did this in the end went like this, I selected all my contacts and tried to save them, this only saved the one selected. So instead I forwarded them onto myself as an attachment, after a few minutes they arrived in my email inbox and after some clicking around the vcard display I saved the file. Then I wrote a small perl script to split the vcards into individual files as the ipod can only read one vcard per file.

This is a bit too much of a hack around, but it worked in the end so I'm pretty happy.

As an aside it would also be cool if you could export tasks to the ipod todo folder.

you can save an entire address book as a vcard, there is a menu option under "File".

uhm... then i'd say the ipod is the bug. :-/

Oh well, lookes like half of my quest could have been easily achieved without having to email myself.

I suppose in future I should look a little closer ;P

I agree that not being able to read a multi entry vcard is the ipod/apples fault, but what are the chances I can get them to fix it? Seriously low I'd expect, so as a favour to me, could this be included?

As the ipod is so popular and is now supported by linux pretty well, it would be cool if evolution could sync with the ipod, same way it syncs with palm.

This could probably be moved to synce, or multisync. Essentially though evolution could have the capability fairly easily as it does for calendar sync.

This is being handled quite well by conduit. I think this isn't really evolutions responsibility
