GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 345192
"Stop" button should stop creating thumbnails in Nautlius
Last modified: 2007-12-28 20:01:05 UTC
Please describe the problem: When browsing images, the 'Stop' button on the Nautlius main toolbar should stop loading the images' thumbnails. This would be especially useful when browsing slow USB 1.1 drives in which loading thumbnails would take quite some time and would use battery power if the device was not USB powered. Steps to reproduce: 1. Connect a slow source such as a USB 1.1 drive with a lot of high-res images 2. Open the mounted drive in Nautilus with thumbnail creation on Actual results: Thumbnail creation cannot be stopped using the logical method: the "Stop" button. The Stop button is grayed out and unusable. Expected results: The stop button should be able to stop downloading files from the device Does this happen every time? Yes Other information:
Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 322828 ***
I don't see how this is a duplicate of 322828. This has nothing to do with keeping the device busy even after the window is closing; this bug is about making the "Stop" button stop loading thumbnails whenever the user wants, not just when the window is closed.
The missing thing here is a way to stop generating thumbnails. Once this missing function is implemented you can link it to window closing or "Stop" button pressing (or both of them). Anyway feel free to reopen the bug if you think it is so much different from 322828.
I don't think this is a duplicate. Bug 322828 investigated cancellability of thumbnailing, while this bug covers that the stop button isn't aware of thumbnailing processes. Note that we consider a directory loaded (thus the stop button gets inactive) when we're able to display the files, no matter whether thumbnailing is still taking place.
I think this would be a killer-feature. it's really annoying when I load up a dvd filled with ~200mb divx/xvid videos and it starts loading thumbnails, making the playback of the videos in the dvd laggy... and I see the solution as not to mark the folder as loaded when it has read all the files and their mimes, but when the thumbnails are finnished... another way to avoid this would be to have the option to disable thumbnail creation from removable media, although this would leave us without thumbnails in devices that cn do that as usb2.0 pendrives and harddrives...
