Description Tom Badran 2006-05-31 15:04:00 UTC
At the moment, clicking on the icon only shows the last 5 notes. However i have screen real estate for many more, and regularly acces around 12 or so notes. Can the max number shown have an option somewhere to be increased, either in the preferences, or at least a gconf key somwhere.

Thanks

Confirming because of the duplicate.

Sorry about the duplicate bug, I searched but found nothing related. Its hard to put this problem in general searchable terms. But anyways, will this be resolved sometime soon? Its really hindering my use of this app. I have about 4 tasks already off the main menu and I repeatedly forget them each day because I don't see them. I'll admit, I'm a lazy man and it takes me a while to do things, but I had hoped this would keep me organized. Thanks for your hard work!

Also, I know this is the wrong place to post. But is there a way to change the default Tomboy icons? In Ubuntu Dapper's tomboy package, the icons were yellow sticky pads and Tomboy's head was replaced by another yellow sticky pad. The cvs version appears different and the icons are somewhat grainy.

The number of notes shown has a minimum of 5, meaning that no matter when the last time you edited a note is, the 5 most recently edited will be shown. Otherwise, any notes edited in the last two days are listed, with up to 18 notes shown. Any notes currently open are also shown.

Damian, you would like to adjust the baseline number up from 5, or would you like to raise the number of days for which notes are always shown up from 2? Or do you want it to just work? :)

"Damian, you would like to adjust the baseline number up from 5, or would you

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but I don't know if you were being sarcastic in the your last comment or not. All I hope for of this application is to see ALL my notes. Having them hidden out of sight serves me no help at all as I rarely open the Table of Contents only to make major adjustments to my notes. As the old saying goes, "out of sight, out of mind," once I don't see it, I forget about it and this impairs my ability to manage/complete my tasks because I won't remember they were there in the first place if I didn't see them listed in the menu. So to answer your question, I just want it to work, and by work, I mean an acceptable means(as you see fit) of displaying the notes. Wether by adding a configuration option or by just simply showing them all by default. I hope I don't seem like I'm "demanding" this of you. I understand this is free software and that if I want something, I should probably do it myself. I just think that this configuration is a great setback to this application. The user should be able to specify what he wants to see in the menu. The current configuration implies that if you don't complete whatever you had to do in that note in two days or if you have more than 5 notes to add, then it gets hidden somewhere. I understand that the purpose of this program is not just as a reminder application or "to do list" and is indeed for note taking and that these notes sometimes don't need to be all displayed on the menu because they don't serve the purpose of a "to do list" so maybe my idea is not compatible with this programs purposes, I don't know. I just hope this option is considered so I can get the most out of this application as it has prooved to be very useful, despite its limitations. Yeah, so I don't know, I'll go with the "just work" option and hope for the best that it'll just work for me. Thanks and I don't mean any disrespect, just a suggestion to improve this very useful application.

Damian, it's not sarcasm. I was asking you to describe what you wanted in more detail.

Unfortunately, just showing all the notes is not a very good option, since I have several hundred notes. That would be a pretty long menu =) So instead we must try to find a way to show recent notes the user might be interested in.
Comment 7 Damian 2006-07-24 23:39:36 UTC
Oh, I'm sorry. I misinterpreted your comment. Well, I guess an option to allow the user to choose how many notes to display in the main menu would be a good start. For me that works because I can have as many notes as I choose to be displayed on the main menu. The days option would be conflicting in my case because I sometimes put things off for weeks, if not months, and I would want to still have that note displayed. For example, I have one note that I wrote about a doctor's appointment with questions for my doctor when I see her. The appointment is around 30 days away. If I was presented with the option of say, "Number of Days to Display Notes: 14," my doctor's note would disapear after day 14 because its 16 days longer than the "display days" setting, and I'd most likely forget what I had to ask her. So yeah, thats my take on it. I hope that made sense. I really love this application, I no longer have to waste money and space on yellow sticky pads! Even better, my desk is not a mess with them anymore! Thanks.

I have to join to Damian request. I'd like to see in the near version of Tomboy few variables to set in the preferences window (used next in the MakeRecentNotesMenu function): minimum number of shown notes (min_size), maximum number of shown notes (max_size) and number of days for which notes are always shown (two_days_ago variable in mentioned function).

Also if I will set max_size variable to 0 it would be nice to have unlimited list of notes.
And same with two_days_ago variable - if i will set it to 0 value i would like to see all of my notes.

I would like to vote on this feature, either making configurable number of notes or optionally opening note index window on left click would be nice.
Comment 10 Boyd Timothy 2006-12-14 16:00:37 UTC
Alex added this feature and it's in Tomboy 0.5.0. There's a GConf setting /apps/tomboy/menu_note_count to control the number of items in the menu.
