Description Sebastien Bacher 2006-05-17 09:44:30 UTC
That issue has been described on https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/42761

"On a normal volume, "delete" puts thing in Trash and shift-delete really deletes. On a read-only volume, "delete" brings up the same warning about really deleting*, which of course will fail. When you try shift-delete, you would expect the same warning. But nothing happens - no reaction to the key press.

Thus can be really confusing, especially if you have the habit of using shift-delete most of the time.

*I guess this is a known bug: it should rather warn that the file can not be deleted.

Confirming, this is still valid.

Still a bug in Nautilus 2.26.2
Comment 4 Mathias Menzer 2009-08-25 05:14:07 UTC
Clarification: In Nautilus 2.26.2, there is a warning when using the "Delete" function, but none when moving a file to the Trash. When the Trash is cleared, Nautilus does not warn anymore, when removing read-only files. Since using the Trash is default in Nautilus, there should at least be a notification when you move a read-only file to it.

What's the status of this bug? Is there any work being carried out?
Comment 6 Dmitri Bachtin 2011-07-20 20:12:00 UTC
$ nautilus --version
GNOME nautilus 3.0.1.1

Scenario played with nautilus:
1. created folder /tmp/read-only
2. created file /tmp/read-only/read-only
3. changed permission for /tmp/read-only/ to access files (was create and delete)
4. deletion
4.1 context menu -- "Move to trash" is disabled (greyed out)
4.2 context menu with shift pressed -- "Move to trash" is disabled (greyed out)
4.3 delete has no action
4.4 shift-delete has no action

Sincerely,
 -- Dmitri Bachtin

Can't reproduce in nautilus 3.3.90-0ubuntu6 - 'Permission Denied' message appears on shift+delete. Please close this issue
Comment 8 Cosimo Cecchi 2012-03-07 16:53:00 UTC
Yes, this is fixed, but the double dialog we get in that case (mentioned in comment #0) is still there.
