Description Alexander Hunziker 2006-03-05 17:01:15 UTC
I sometimes use my PC as a music player, after a while the screen saver shows up
and it just continues playing. Now it would be nice if a button press on "Next
Track" or "Volume up" didn't kill the screensaver. If the screen is even in
Powersave mode then that would be even more interesting.

Are these multimedia keys handled by hardware? If they are handled by software then I don't think the screensaver will allow those keys to work at all when the screen is locked.

Powersave mode (aka DPMS) is mostly managed by the xserver. When it detects activity it turns the display back on. So, there isn't much we can do about that.

I understand, that this can be a security issue, but it would be very nice if gnome-screensaver would have an ability to resend some keys (from user-changeable keylist) to gnome-desktop when screen is locked. We can create a gconf setting for this feature.

Regardless, it would be preferable for the screensaver not to wake up if non-alphanumeric keys are pressed. In my bug (marked duplicate) the media buttons are outside of lid and will cause the screensaver to wake up if I'm carrying my laptop and accidentally push the buttons.

Marking this as a duplicate of a newer bug with more details and a patch.
