GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 333035
There should be a way to change session language from the "Desktop->Preferences" menu
Last modified: 2007-06-28 19:41:58 UTC
The language for a session is selected in the gdm login screen, but what if another desktop manager is used that lacks this feature, or what if Gnome is started by some startx script outside of a desktop manager. It really should be possible to set language from wihtin the session. I did the following little test on 6 of my coworkers. I changed my language to German, and asked them to change the language to Swedish. They all work with computers as software developers and could be described as exerienced computer users. None of them managed to figure out how to change language, by using the GUI. They, all gave up two of them suggested making changes to /etc/profile. All of them exept one are dayly users of Gnome. (The remaining person use KDE) The first place all of them looked was in the Desktop->Preferences, they then went on to the Destktop->Administration nebut as I didn't have the root password they couldn't continue. Then they gave up exept for one that tried find some way to do it by using "Application->Configuration Editor" While doing the test they were asked to tell me what they were doing. During the visit to Prefererences and Administratin menus, they all sounded like thye had a plan to solve the taske and showed no signs of hesitation. After that they wen't silent and looked in various menus to get a clue what to do. My test persons didn't find the menu to change the session language under the options menu in the "Happy Gnome" login screen that was used, but even if they had they would have at least two possibilities to misinterpret its use. 1) The setting applies to the login screen 2) The setting applies to hte computer, as things that belongs to a session usually are changed after the login has taken place. I'm not saying that the configuration in the gdm login screen should go away, but it certainly needs to be complemented by a setting in the "Desktop->Preferenss" menu. Other information:
I agree! And that'd also be a useful feature for translators in many many ways!
This is not a GDM bug. It sounds like you are asking for control-center to offer a feature to change the language for the running session when users are using a different display manager than GDM, or just running startx. I'm moving this bug to control-center.
I think if not a duplicate, at least this bug is strictly related to bug #333104.
