GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 331478
Panel applet should open actions menu on left click rather thatn right click
Last modified: 2006-02-18 20:21:38 UTC
In order to have the same behaviour as other status icons do, I think g-p-m should open its actions menu on left click (maybe put the preferences into an extra menu on right click). I don't know if the HIG does specify a behaviour in this matter, but other applications that sit in the tray like network-manager, tomboy, gaim or gajim, update-manager in ubuntu and probably others as well all do their active things on left click. If there is a main window that gets hidden or shown, that happens on left click and right click opens a menu for preferences. If only a little menu directly beneath the icon is shown, that happens on left click for actions, tinting the background of the specific icon in blue (maybe comes from the current color scheme), which makes it clear where that menu belongs. G-p-m for now does not indicate the origin of the menu (for example like in tomboy or network-manager) nor does it do anything on left-click, which might confuse a new user quite a bit. I would expect a unique behaviour of all the icons on top of my screen. Other information:
g-p-m 2.13.90 does do the same action for left click as right click, see #327959 for more details. I'm not sure what you mean about the tinting, could you attach a screenshot please?
Created attachment 59578 [details] Screenshot of tint effect with nm This is the way network-manager tints the background of the icon, while the menu is open (which is by some reason not on the screenshot)
Sorry then for not having checked the newest version (I only use the package from ubuntu dapper), it's probably the way I expected it now. The screenshot shows the way at least network-manager and tomboy do it, probably more apps as well. Users with high resolutions and therefore small icons might click inadvertently on one icon next to the one they want. Then it's useful to see what menu you opened so you don't have to scan the content of the menu and guess. IMHO it's a a nice idea.
The tinting is due to NM being a menu. In g-p-m the tray widget is just an icon with a popup menu. I think the way it is now is fine particularly because the actions will probably end up in the gnome-panel anyway.
Agreed.
