GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 330245
stock_volume-0 is a mute icon
Last modified: 2006-02-14 21:25:30 UTC
Due to that the mixer applet displays a mute icon when the sound is not muted
Let's not bore users with technical details here. If your volume is set to 0, it's muted. Why should we have the exact same icon, but with the only difference being that it doesn't have the little [x] emblem, when it's 0? It makes no sense really. Not that displaying volume level in an icon is the best thing to do anyway, since you end up either having large ranges (33%) for each icon, or you end up having lots of icons, where the difference between them is maybe a pixel or two. Both of these are generally bad, because 33% is a very large change, and having lots of icons doesn't really tell the user that something's different, visually, until they change the volume a large amount, and it requires artists to draw the same icon many times with very small changes between each icon. The mixer really should not be using -0 for any value above 0. 22% is not 0, for instance.
I filed bug 330508 (including patch) in gnome-applets
Marking this as a dup then. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 330508 ***
