GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 329464
Add a "Check for updates online" menu entry
Last modified: 2018-05-24 11:42:56 UTC
This doesn't have to be something complicated - just a menu entry that calls page on www.gimp.org with the version number. For example, like http://livehttpheaders.mozdev.org/?ver=0.11 does it.
If we consider this a good idea, it should be trivial to add such a link to the web-browser script-fu script (which should perhaps be renamed to web-links).
I would like this idea as well, although an internal update would be better. Something along the lines of Firefox, where you download the affected patches, or ever Filezilla, were you check for updates, download the whole package, then install, all in an easy to use internal interface.
I'd like to see it as an option in the Help Menu.
Is any of you +1 guys going to implement this?
IIRC we have a proposal about this on the mailing lists.

still think this needs to be done...
Would you want to give it a try? Shouldn't bee too hard to do in e.g. Python, at least if the check is limited to the currently available releases and not a particular package for any platform.
We could do this for the Microsoft Windows platforms and Apple OS X now, as we host those builds on download.gimp.org.
