GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 325084
gnome-icon-theme should provide a stock RSS feed icon
Last modified: 2010-04-22 14:32:27 UTC
There was a recent consensus about a common rss icon for browsers like IE and firefox. More browsers are going to use it. Independently of this, it would be great to have some icon representing an RSS feed. Could gnome-icon-theme come up with a stock RSS icon, preferably respecting the consensus [1] ? (Maybe the palette needs gnome color tweaking ?) [1] http://www.mattbrett.com/archives/2005/12/the-new-standard-feed-icon/
I also filed a bug for the same issue against tango-project: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5432
Created attachment 56446 [details] Feed icon with tango colors This comes from the bove mentionned site. I adapted the colors to use the tango palette. It looks fine when exported to 24 pixels, but under that it should be tweaked by hand..
dobey suggests we bring up the issue on the freedesktop mailing list to reach consensus about a naming spec with the KDE people.
Can't we use an icon for ourselves first? (the patch suggested by Raphael Slinckx for example) and later change the icon to whatever comes out of the discussion @ freedesktop.org?
I am not letting any new icons into gnome-icon-theme that are not following the naming spec. The theme is supposed to be an API that developers can rely upon, and we can't have that if people just keep throwing random junk in it, that we have to rename later after people decide on a sane name for it. Everyone seems to want this as an action icon, or at least, the implication is that the icon is to be used for an "add this feed" button. To me, there is not appropriate name that would fit the given icon, for an action, and RSS itself does not define the content. It is merely a container. Perhaps this should be a MIME type icon then? It is unclear to me how this should be added, or why it should be in the base theme, given that it is application specific.
