It would be really, really useful for GLib to have a copy of xdgmime embedded,
and expose its functionality via a few functions.  GTK+ and gnomevfs would then
use this rather than their own copy of xdgmime.

Completely agreed... but I guess work on this is useless as gvfs will include such functionality already?

This should be solved with the apis provided in gio.
