I opened this bug some time ago here ::

thinking that it was just an Ubuntu issue.

As it turns out, this is our fault.  The Makefile.am needs to contain
DOC_FIGURES for all the .png's that you want to get included by 'make dist'.  If
you don't do this then CVS installs will work but tarball installs will not.

Shaun says that this should probably be fixed in g-d-u (ie: so that the figures
are auto-detected).

For 2.12.1 I'm just going to work around it.

This bug only exists as documentation.
