Description Sitsofe Wheeler 2005-09-18 18:51:43 UTC
Please describe the problem:
I borrowed the CD version of Discworld off a friend and noticed it had a PDF
game manual. Since the PDF was rather graphics heavy I added to my suite of
evince test PDFs because at 100% strange diagonal lines appear over some pages.

Now I had a problem because the PDF is part of a commercial package but it
appears that a smaller version of the PDF is already online. I'm sure this is
illegal since the game can still be bought on budget but anyway...

Steps to reproduce:
1. Download
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/replacementdocs/Discworld_Noir_-_Manual_-_PC.pdf
2. Open the downloaded file in evince.
3. Set the zoom to 100% and go to page 3 (the manual itself calls this page 4
but evince sees it as 3).

Actual results:
Page appears but with a strange diagonal line runing from the top left to the
bottom right and a few other strange artifacts on it.

Expected results:
No black diagonal line or artifacts to appear, page to be displayed properly.

Does this happen every time?
Yes, this happens every time.

Other information:
Other PDF readers (e.g, acroread, xpdf) do not display artifacts.
Comment 1 Sitsofe Wheeler 2005-09-18 18:52:23 UTC
Forgot to mention the version:
evince-0.4.0-3 OpenSUSE 10
poppler-0.4.2-3 OpenSUSE 10
Comment 2 Marco Pesenti Gritti 2005-09-22 13:05:13 UTC
Is poppler using cairo or splash (see Help->About).
Comment 3 Sitsofe Wheeler 2005-09-22 22:22:56 UTC
In Ubuntu it is using splash. It should be noted that after a recent libpoppler
update in Ubuntu which was also showing the problem the diagonal artifcat went away.

I shall just check on OpenSUSE...
Comment 4 Sitsofe Wheeler 2005-09-22 22:30:11 UTC
On OpenSUSE the about box says that poppler is using cairo.
Comment 5 Sitsofe Wheeler 2005-09-22 22:33:03 UTC
According to
http://packages.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/p/poppler/poppler_0.4.2-0ubuntu4/changelog
one of the recent changes was for poppler to be built with splash.

Hi, this looks like a bug with the PDF backend. Could you please follow these instructions to help get this bug fixed. Thank You. http://live.gnome.org/Evince/PopplerBugs#poppler
Comment 7 Sitsofe Wheeler 2006-03-02 20:45:05 UTC
This may take me a while because I am no longer on a system that defaults to using the cario version of poppler (and thus currently don't see the problem)...
Comment 8 Nickolay V. Shmyrev 2006-03-02 20:48:29 UTC
Sitsofe, can you please attach your document here. The link in comment #1 looks like broken
Comment 9 Sitsofe Wheeler 2006-03-03 08:42:50 UTC
I actually tested the link last night - it is very very slow but not broken. I unfortunately can't attach the document here since it is a manual from a commercially distributed game (see my opening comment).
Comment 10 Nickolay V. Shmyrev 2006-03-03 20:31:22 UTC
Well, I see, without document it would be really hard to debug this problem. I hope it will be reproduced with other document and we'll be able tofix it.
